It is very important to use all of the power from your legs in a sprint start. Notice how the sprinter in the foreground is driving off of his back leg and driving to full extension. This a very violent and explosive movement. The arms are being driven as well and are almost over exaggerated to speed up the leg explosion. The sprinter will then use several of his first strides to drive his body into the upright sprinting position.
Take a look at the photo. Notice the arm position of the runner. This is Asafa Powell, the former world record holder in the the 100M. He has run a time of 9.76 in the 100M. His arms are at right angles, elbow is being pulled back and his hand stops at his hip. Although he is running at a fast speed he is relaxed.
